My grandfather was an awesome guy. He was really friendly, charming, and generally kind. His healthy wasn't so great though - he suffered from "post polio syndrome", which as I understand it is a condition caused by muscles damaged by, you guessed it, polio. My grandfather was paralyzed from polio for a few years in his late teens, but eventually recovered and could walk, move freely, and even dance.
Although I don't remember exactly, I estimate he started walking with a cane in his late fifties, then arm crutches in his sixties, and then a wheel chair in his late sixties. Throughout this time, "Grandpum" stayed mobile with the help of a golf cart. It was really cool. I even helped him build a road for it! :-)
